I awoke for Michael and Zane’s wedding day incredibly excited to return to one of my favorite venues: Canyon Run Ranch. It’s a beautiful place in Troy, Ohio, complete with a wooden barn for receptions, an adorable Milk Parlour for cocktail hour, and a hidden gem of a ceremony location, nestled at the end of a long wooded path.
We began our afternoon with Michael and Zane getting ready together in the wedding suite on the property. The light in the space was perfect for moodier, more intimate imagery as they spent this treasured quiet time alone before their celebration. Before venturing out for portraits, they exchanged gifts. Zane, a lover of old books, received a 1934 edition of Mary Poppins. Michaels received a Zane-drawn illustration, and a watch.
Because Canyon Run Ranch is so beautiful and expansive, we chose to use the waterfall and wildflower fields for couple’s portraits. What we didn’t know about the wildflower field was that it was quite far down a long, narrow path, and so we belly-laughed our way through on a golf cart, dodging the foliage coming at us from both sides. As you’ll see though, it was 100% worth it. (Even the part where I almost lost a lens in the expansive field. Don’t worry, I said almost.)
After time with their fantastically dressed wedding party, the ceremony soon began. There were tears — especially during their heartfelt, handwritten, vows — noting how deeply Marriage Equality changed their lives and possibility to marry. But there was also laughter and joy, and their adorable nephew playing in the dirt as they wed. Oh, those cute little moments.
As the evening continued, through cocktail and toasts, it was evident how deeply each family embraced the other’s. During the mother-son dance, they even switched and danced with the other’s mom; it was beautiful and a symbol of unity. Throughout the evening, there was a long line for the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream stand, too. (Who knew they catered!? Such a win!) And of course, lots of dancing followed as the sun set over the horizon.
Cheers to Michael + Zane!
